navAvaraNa shrIrAga mAlAM navAM samarpitAM svIkuru tava lIlAm

shivE shrI cAmarAja mahIshE disha ma"ngaLam sadAshrita harikEshE

This is a heavy composition glorifying the navAvaraNams of the shrI cakram, similar in line with the kamalAmbA navAvaraNa kIrtanams of muttusvAmi dIkSitar, Here, the composer starts the rAgamAlikA with a salutation to Lord gaNapati (svarNAkarSaNa gaNapati, to be specific). This is followed by nine caraNam segments, each devoted to one AvaraNam of the shrI cakram. The composer cleverly employes different vibhaktis (declensions) for each stanza, as in the kamalAmbA navAvaraNa series.  The eleventh and the concluding segment is the ma"ngaLa caraNam, appropriately in the auspicious rAgam shrI, praising the Goddess, as a protector of the composer's patron, cAmarAjEndra (MahArAjA of Mysore)

In order to understand the significance and meaning of this rAgamAlikA, one needs to have an overview of the shrI cakram and its geometrical features.  The following links give the appropriate background.

MEANING of the rAgamAlikA

Oh svarNAkarSaNa Ganapati, the one with a superb mind, and who is the treasurehouse of infinite compassion, please grant me the energy to compose this song on the nine AvaraNams, that is bound to be ambrosia to the listening ear.

first AvaraNam -- prathamA vibhakti (nominative case)

Basic word-order:  "ambA mAm avatu" (Let ambA protect me). Goddess dEvi, ambA, kumAri, bhavAni, the dazzling one, the ruler of the trailOkya mOhana cakram (first AvaraNam), dwelling in the directions of tripurA, and so forth, and the one who by a mere glance, grants all the various powers such as aNimA, Let She protect me

second AvaraNam  -- dvitIyA vibhakti  (accusative case)

Basic word-order: "(ahaM) nIrajasanIM  bhajE" (I worship Her, the one seated on the lotus). I worship Her, who resides in the sarvAshAparuipUraka cakram (second AvaraNam), who is capable of removing the sorrows of the worldly attachments instantly, who grants the bliss of eternal happiness, who is ever pure, who is trimUrti, who is seated on a lotus, and who has the reputation of total blemishlessness.

third AvaraNam --  tritIyA vibhakti (instrumental case)

Basic word-order: "tvayA jagat rakSyatE"  (the world is protected by You). Day and night, the world is protected by You, the ever auspicious kalyANi, who possesses of the eight fold energies commencing with anan"nga kusuma, who dwells in the sarvasaMkSObhaNa cakram (third AvaraNam), worshiped by ana"nga, etc.

fourth AvaraNam -- caturthI vibhakti (dative case)

Basic word-order: " … bhAsurahIravalayAyai namaH"  (salutations to Her, the one decorated with shining golden ornaments) Salutations to Her, salutations to Her, who is sukumAra rOhiNI pada, who is the moon in the ocean of sarvasaubhAgyadAyakaya cakram (fourth AvaraNam), who resides in the outer manukOna (14 triangles), who is decorated with shining golden jewels.

fifth AvaraNam --  pa~ncamI vibhakti (ablative case)

Basic word order.  "…   vishvambharayA kAlItaH me manaH na DiyatE" (my mind does not fly away from Goddess kALi). Flying away from kALi is impossible (cannot break away from Her), so, in my devotion, my mind is ever attached to Her, who is ruler of the desirous sarvArthasAdhaka cakram (fifth AvaraNam), who is of the form of mellifluous sound, and who is adept in the cosmic dance (lAsya), and who controls the nine-fold universe.

sixth AvaraNam -- SaSThI vibhakti (genitive case)

Basic word-order: "(aham)  tava dAsaH (asmi)"  (I am your servant). I am your humble devoted servant, oh! kalyANi, caNDIkA dEvi!   who is seated in the chariot of  the dashAra (10 triangles)  in the form of ten-folded fire (dashakalAtmaka vahni svarUpa),  who shines in the sarvarakSAkara cakram (sixth AvaraNam), who has ten-fold energies,  who is worshipped by dashamudrAs

seventh AvaraNam -- saptamI vibhakti (locative case)

Basic word-order: " tvayi bhaktiM mE dEhi"  (Please grant me devotion unto Thee) Oh shAmbhavi, sha"nkari, who dwells in the savrarOgahara cakram (seventh AvaraNam), shining like a jambu fruit, fulfilling every desires. Please grant me devotion unto Thee instantly

eighth AvaraNam -- sambOdhanA vibhakti (vocative case)

Please Bless me! Oh durgA, of unparalleled glory, who is without any blemish, who rejoices in the sarvasiddhiprada cakram (eighth AvaraNam), possessing the most precious quality valued by the dEvas, who  removes all distress, who confers auspiciousness, and who resides in Lord shiva.

ninth AvaraNam

Oh! Mother ambA, subhadrA, the ocean of joy! the one residing in the sarvAnandamaya cakram (ninth AvaraNam), who radiates the sat-cid-Ananadam  (existence-consciousness-bliss), who is revered in all scriptures, please be kind enough to shower ocean of delights on (this) good land.

 ma"ngaLa stuti

Oh Goddess shivA, the protector of MahArAja cAmarAja! The one always worshipped by HarikEsha!  Please accept this noval, and auspicious. this garland of navAvaraNa rAgamAla that I have humbly placed at your feet, and grant us auspiciousness (ma"ngaLam).

The lyrics of this rAgamAlika in in sanskrit and diacritical English are available at: www.carnatica.net/lyrics/ragamalika.htm

RAGA MUDRA

There is cleverly built-in rAgamudra in  each of the eleven stanzas of this rAgamAlika. Some of these are straightforward phrases like mOhana, bhairavi, kalyAni, saurASTram, and shrI.  For the remaining rAgams, we find the typical dIkSitar-like constructions -  suguNadhanAsima (for dhanyAsi),  bhavasantApa (for vasanta) kambhOdIndavE (for kAmbhOji), kALItODIyatE (for tODi),  samayav.rtATana (for AThANA), and  suraTIkagunE (for suraTi). The vAggEyakAra mudra (composer's signature), "harikEsha" is present in the last line of the rAgamAlikA. Due to its sacredness, depth in concept, and deep shrIvidyA philosophy, this rAgamAlikA is never heard in public concerts.
