This song, popularly known as "ra~njani
mAlA", beautifully describes Goddess as ra~njani,
shrIra~njani, mEghara~njani, and janara~njani, which, incidentally,
are also the names of the four rAgams that constitute this beautiful
and simple rAgamAlikA.
MEANING
Oh Goddess! You are the delightful one (ra~njani).
You have eyes resembling tender lotus petals. Your speech is very sweet. You
delight the minds (of your devotees); you have soft and slow gait, and you
are shrIra~njani. You delight in
the musical chants of the sAma vEda.
Your face is beautiful like the moon . You gave birth to cupid; you are
mEgha ra~njani (the delighter of
clouds).
You always protect
the afflicted ones. You are shUlini, the one with the trident. You
remove all sins. You are the pure one. You are janara~njani, the
delight of all people.
RAGA
MUDRA is
featured for all four rAgams, as the name of the Goddess.

This
rAgamAlikA, frequently heard these days in concerts, was popularized by
the school of Smt.i D. K. Pattammal/shrI D. K. Jayaraman, who usually made it
a point to render some monumental compositions of the living composer,
ta~njAvUtr sha"nkara ayyar.
NOTATIONS for
this rAgamAlikA can be viewed at
http://www.ecse.rpi.edu/Homepages/shivkuma/personal/music/Ranjanimridupankaja.htm
