The composer offers his
salutations and heartfelt thanks to the dEvi (pallavi and
anupallavi), and in the three caraNams that follow, explains the
reasons for the same. The first caraNam takes the form of a request, and
the next two offer thanks to the dEvi for granting his request.
MEANING
Oh Mother
lalitA! the Goddess! of the universe (bhuvanEshvari), the
Goddess who is seated in the courtly throne (simhAsana) in the middle
of the shrI cakra, dEvi lalitA
(My salutations to
Thee!)
You are the essential manifestation of the
religious scriptures, vEdas and Agamas, and all graceful arts.
Oh nArAyaNI! You are the
generator of all life forms in the entire universe
(both moving and immovable). You captivate the mind of the cosmic
dancer, Lord shiva (naTarAja), who is adorned
with snakes as bracelets. Oh rAjarAjEshvarI (the consort of shiva,
the king of kings), You are the repository of all learning and
knowledge.
Oh kAmEshvari The Goddess of KA~nci!
Please grant me the mental stability to subdue
all my ego and see you everywhere in this world , and in the process, give me
the opportunity to sing and dance your praises and offer flowers at
your feet.
Oh ever
auspicious one! bhavAnI! dEvi who resides in a lotus! When I was
wandering aimlessly, and suffering endlessly, it was you who destroyed the
tyranny of the fruits of the bad deeds (left over from my previous births)
that were following me like a shadow You have made me an exalted person of
sterling worth, and accepted me in the company of of superior human beings.
By
subjecting me to an ordeal by fire (by placing me in a hollow vessel of
misery), you made me pure and removed the veil of illusion that was
following me not just in this birth, but in many previous ones as well, and
you finally blessed me with the ability to realize the purpose of my birth
You fed me your love, just as a mother would nurse her child, and made me
realize the many acts and mysterious deeds of yours . Oh Goddess of the
entire universe, you alone are my refuge in this world! (My Salutations to
Thee!)
