MUSIC AND PHYSICS |
The very
art of sound production is physics. To understand the acoustics of the voice box, music
halls, etc one requires a sound knowledge of physics. The construction and playing
techniques of any musical instrument is based on the principle of resonators, laws of
vibrations and of course, a fascinating study of solid and plane geometry. The underlying
principle of simple harmonic motion is found when executing a Kampita Gamaka, wherein,
a particular note is oscillated between two fixed notes that serve as the maximum and
minimum limits. As mentioned earlier, sound properties such as pitch, intensity, timbre,
loudness, etc are all physical properties which determine the quality of voice and hence,
of the music. |
