MUSIC AND PAINTING |
Ragamalas are poems
describing the thirty-six odd musical modes. Ragas and Raginis have been illustrated as pictures in the 16th
and early 17th century Rajasthani paintings. These paintings belong to a pure
Indian tradition. The paintings, like the poems they illustrate, represent situations in
which the emotional colouring corresponds with the feeling of the Raga / Ragini. The time
of the day and year, and state of the weather appropriate to the Raga are also indicated
in the paintings. The compositions of a particular Raga / Ragini are generally constant.
For example Raga Bhairavi is always represented by a group of women worshipping at a
Siva shrine, Raga Asaveri
by a female snake-charmer, Raga Todi by a woman with a Vina to the sound of which the
wild deer are attracted, Raga Desakhya by an acrobatic performance and so on. The
iconography and the sentiment or mood associated with each Raga / Ragini are embodied in
the form of invocatory verses which are composed in Hindi or Sanskrit. |
