Bharatanatyam is an ancient
and divine classical dance form, which is the embodiment of the
mythological and historical traditions, associated with the Natyasastra.
Parvathi Ravi Ghantasala, performer, teacher, choreographer and
organiser,
has become synonymous with all that is the best in Bharatanatyam.
Parvathi was initiated at a young age, into the
art of Bharatanatyam by the veteran guru Kalaimamani Smt. Krishnakumari Narendran
(Founder of Abhinaya Natyalaya) and had her Arangetram in 1978. Parvathi has harnessed intellectual quest, aesthetic sensibility and spiritual depth
and invested them in to her art,
which make her performances scale great creative and classical heights. She has
had the privilege of performing at various prestigious Sabhas all over the
nation and abroad, like the Music Academy, Krishna Gana Sabha, Narada Gana Sabha,
Bharat Kalachar, Indian Fine Arts and Tamil Isai Sangam. Her dance has also been
featured in prominent festivals like the Swarna Samaroh, Kalakshetra Foundation, Doon
festival, Brindavan
Shamadosta and the World Tamil Conference.
She is an ‘A’ grade artiste of
Doordarshan, the state-owned TV channel. Her solo performances and panoramic dance-ballets on devotional themes for
which concepts were given by people of such stature as the Honourable Justice
K S Bhaktavatsalam,
mark her individualistic contribution to the genre of classical Indian dance.
Her performances include compositions of Tyagaraja, Swati Tirunal, Mahakavi Subramanya
Bharati, Tirumoolar Tirumandiram, Sri Mahavir Bhagvan etc, all choreographed by her
guru, and are examples of aesthetic blending of dance with the themes. These
have won her high acclaim from connoisseurs and critics.
Parvathi is the recipient of several titles
such as the “Kalaimamani”, awarded by the Government of Tamilnadu.
Incidentally, she is the daughter-in-law of the playback singer late
Padmasri Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao. |
