Subramanyam hails from a family of musicians. He had his initial lessons in violin from his father and advanced training from Tirupunitura Narayana Iyer. He made his debut at the age of eleven and began his career by accompanying the 'Promoter of Rising Stars', Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar. He is known for his fine musical acumen and his sharp and crisp renditions, rich with raga bhava. He is also widely acclaimed for his excellent bowing technique. He has composed quite a few varnams, kritis, tillanas, bhajans, English notes and discovered ragas such as Priyaranjani, Radhapriya and Sanchari. He is an author as well, having written books like ‘Violin Varalaru’ and ‘Satyameva Jayate’ on Swati Tirunal.
