MANI KRISHNASWAMI - TRUE GUIDE

Reproduced here is a tribute to the late Sangeeta Kalanidhi Mani Krishnaswami by one of her disciples, Haripriya Ramakrishnan. We received this by email.

Dear Editor,

I was a student of Smt. Mani Krishnaswami for 2 years (1995-1997) and would like to pen a few words on my experiences with her.

To me, Mani Mami was much more than a teacher. She was a friend, counsel and guide, and had exceeding patience and a keen interest in teaching. From her, I not only learnt music, but also good manners, behaviour, correct facial expressions, and respect for human spirit without other considerations, to name a few. Every second that I spent with her, I consider precious.

Her belief in the foundations of music was tremendous. I realized the true significance of Sarali Varisai, its practise, correct pronounciation of lyrics and the meanings of kritis that I learnt from her. Every year on Vijayadasami, Mami made her students sing Sarali Varisai first, thus instilling in them the foundations of progress for the next year.
