Meaning

This k.rti is in "saptami vibhakti" - abhayAmbAyAM. The basic anvayam is -
ahaM abhayAmbAyAm bhaktiM karomi. All the phrases in this song ending in "AM'
indicated by "who/whose " below) are in locative case qualifying abhayAmbAyAm.

pallavi

I offer my devotion to abhayAmbA
who is of the form of sat cit Ananda (existence - knowledge - bliss), and
who is also of the non dualistic form of the supreme self.

samaSTi caraNaM

who is mantriNi, adept in giving plenty of riches;
who is daNDini, who gives the skill for obtaining victory;
who is mAlini, of the form of five elements, beginning with the sky;
who is shUlini, the one adept in removing difficulties;
who is understood through advaitic monism, free from distinctions,
who is realised by guruguha at the very beginning;
whose dance pleases Lord shiva, the lord of the sabha (dance court);
whose feet bestow salvation to her devotees.

NOTES

This is the only k.rti in the abhayAmbA vibhakti series with a pallavi and samaSTicaraNam (instead of the customary pallavi - anupallavi - caraNam). DikSitar has numerous k.rtis in this format, a bulk of them composed in Thanjavur, as a meLakartA project to illustrate the musical capabilities of various asampUrNa meLams.

The antya akSara rhymes occur in the samaSTi caraNam in all lines - mantriNyAm, daNDinyam, malinyaM, shUlinyAAm, pAditAyAM, veditayam, naTanAyAM, caranAyAM. The first four lines of the samaSTi caranam are a single word each.

This k.rti does not feature a rAga mudra. The goddess is described in four different forms, mantriNi, daNDini, mAlini, and shUlini.
Three of these are qualified with the phrase (adept) in bestowing a quaity, namely, riches, victory, and removing obstacles.

A discussion of the rAgam sahAnA can be found in Carnatica's CAC Newsletter (Proceedings of the Raganubhava session)
