The Global Carnatic Music Association (GCMA), founded by musicians Sudha Raghunathan and K.N.Shashikiran, is organizing the first ever 100-hour concert in the history of Carnatic music, from the 31st of July to the 4th of August. This concert will be a garland of hundred 1-hour concerts, as a tribute to the doyen of Carnatic music, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, whose birth centenary fell on the 25th of July.

The GCMA was founded in 2007 with the aim of bringing together the Carnatic music fraternity across the world. It provides a common platform for musicians and artistes to share their experiences, discuss common issues and sharpen their skills.

Since its inception, the GCMA has been coming up with innovative programs, which have received overwhelming response from musicians and rasikas alike. Last year, the association organized the hugely popular “Coffee with Celebrity” series, in which music fans across Chennai were given the opportunity to meet their favourite Carnatic musicians for a tête-à-tête over coffee. The association also conducted a free health check-up for musicians, by Dr.S.Srivatsan.

The association has now come up with yet another path breaking event – a 100-hour music marathon, for the first ever time in the history of Carnatic music! The entire community of Carnatic musicians will join hands and come together to perform at the same venue continuously for more than four days! Over 100 musicians - veteran, popular, as well as upcoming - will perform day and night, non-stop, for 100 hours!

Besides being a tribute to the legend Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, this event will serve several noble causes. It will be a prayer on behalf of all musicians for the cause of our deteriorating environment and against global warming. It will also be a prayer to avert incidents like the recent blasts in Bangalore and Ahmedabad, and for universal peace and harmony.

The entire event is open to rasikas. However, the organizers will accept donations, which will be forwarded to the descendants of the great composer Shyama Shastri - one of the Carnatic trinity - who now live in penury.

Besides the music, there will be added attractions for the audience, in the form of special prizes. Prizes will be awarded to those rasikas who are present for the maximum duration.

The program will begin at 5:30 pm on the 31st of July and conclude at about 10:00 pm on the 4th of August. It will take place at Tyagaraja Sangeetha Vidwat Samajam, Mylapore.

Musicians who will perform include veterans like Parassala Ponnamma, Sangeetha Kalanidhi Prof.T.N.Krishnan, Sangeetha Kalanidhi B.Rajam Iyer, Sangeetha Kalanidhi Dr.N.Ramani, Sangeetha Kalanidhi T.K.Govinda Rao, Sangeetha Kalanidhi Madurai T.N.Seshagopalan, T.V.Gopalakrishnan, Kadri Gopalnath, Kanyakumari, V.V.Subramanyam, O.S.Thyagarajan, Suguna Purushottaman, Suguna Varadachari, T.Rukmini, Rama Ravi, Bombay Sisters, Aleppey Venkatesan and Madurai G.S.Mani, and popular musicians like Sudha Raghunathan, Sowmya, Vijay Siva, Neyveli Santhanagopalan, Mala Chandrasekhar, G.J.R.Krishnan, Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi, Gayathri Girish, Dr.Ganesh, Bhushani Kalyanaraman, Sriram Parasuram, Rajesh Vaidhya, Gayathri Venkataraghavan, Geetha Raja, Suryaprakash and Maharajapuram Srinivasan. Other young stars who will perform include Nisha Rajagopal, Mambalam Sisters, T.N.S. Krishna, Manasi Prasad, Subha Ganesan, Vijayagopal, Balamurali Krishna Jr., Amritha Murali and a few NRI musicians.

Accompanying musicians include violinists Nagai Muralidharan, V.V.S.Murari, Dr.Narmada, V.V.Ravi, M.R.Gopinath, V.L.Kumar, Usha Rajagopalan, Padma Shankar and R.K.Sriram Kumar and percussionists Guruvayur Durai, Mannargudi Easwaran, Srimushnam Raja Rao, K.V.Prasad, Thanjavur Murugabhoopathi, Neyveli Narayanan, Poongulam Subramaniam, Trivandrum Vaidhyanathan, Thanjavur Ramadoss, J.Balaji, Arun Prakash, Manoj Siva, Kallidaikuruchi Sivakumar, Ganapathy Raman, B.Sivaraman, Sankaranarayanan and K.R.Ganesh. The Violin Trio (M.S.Anantharaman, M.A.Sundareswaran and M.A.Krishnaswamy) will also perform. Sangeetha Kalanidhi T.N.Seshagopalan will perform on three days – veena, vocal and swararaga pradarshini (keyboard), one on each day! Playback singers Mahathi, Binny Krishnakumar, Palghat Sriram and Saindhavi will also participate. This list of participating musicians is, however, not exhaustive.

The association also invites all other musicians who would like to participate, to be a part of this mega-event.

I was there at the venue and it was indeed a carnival time! It was probably one of the best gathering of so many musicians at Sri Thyagaraja Vidwath Samajam. It is indeed a great effort and kudos to GCMA for this wonderful effort. May be this is another step towards many which can be achieved with this kind of co-operation from all artists.

Understand few concerts or few songs of all the artists is to be shown in kumudam.com in the near future.

It has been one of the best week ends i have ever had in my life as i was attending the 100 hr Marathon concert effort of GCMA. Even though i would have spent just around 10 - 14 hrs in all from the 31st Jul till now, I have had the oppurtunity to listen to some quality music with artists singing / performing with great interest. The concept of Music Therapy does work, i understand from few rasikas who has been there for over 60 - 65 hours till now. The highlight to me of them all was the son of Sri Palghat Sriram who sang for may be 20 mts but stole the hearts of every one present. A real prodigy in all terms and the interesting thing is apart from that 20 mts minutes on stage, just Childish as he should be, he was playing around the venue not giving even a clue that he is a child with such a great talent!

The attendance yesterday and day before was good and as Mr. Sashikiran mentioned this effort of the musicians and the rasikas probably touched the heart of rain god who was kind to shower his blessings with real good rain from the evening of yesterday. It was indeed a great treat to the rasikas with likes to listen to Sri TVG, Sri M Chandrasekaran, Sri VV Subramaniam & Kum Kanyakumari. Speacial mention to be made the for the quality of audio system provided by Kannan Audios with their staff present all through out, making it a pleasant experience for the rasikas to listen to the wonderful music. In my opinion this is indeed a success for GCMA in bringing together so many artists to perform for a cause so willingly. I am sure its volunteers who have been working non-stop, the sponsors, and most the rasikas who have been there for long hours are to be appreciated for their efforts and look forward to more such concepts.

I have uploaded one concert i.e. of Sathya in the following video link http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p ... FAD0166BD0 and audio uploaded in link www.sangeethamshare.org/sathya under serial number 017.
