The Global Carnatic Music Association (GCMA), founded by musicians Sudha Raghunathan and K.N.Shashikiran, is organizing the first ever 100-hour concert in the history of Carnatic music, from the 31st of July to the 4th of August. This concert will be a garland of hundred 1-hour concerts, as a tribute to the doyen of Carnatic music, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, whose birth centenary fell on the 25th of July.
The GCMA was founded in 2007 with the aim of bringing together the Carnatic music fraternity across the world. It provides a common platform for musicians and artistes to share their experiences, discuss common issues and sharpen their skills.
Since its inception, the GCMA has been coming up with innovative programs, which have received overwhelming response from musicians and rasikas alike. Last year, the association organized the hugely popular “Coffee with Celebrity” series, in which music fans across Chennai were given the opportunity to meet their favourite Carnatic musicians for a tête-à-tête over coffee. The association also conducted a free health check-up for musicians, by Dr.S.Srivatsan.
The association has now come up with yet another path breaking event – a 100-hour music marathon, for the first ever time in the history of Carnatic music! The entire community of Carnatic musicians will join hands and come together to perform at the same venue continuously for more than four days! Over 100 musicians - veteran, popular, as well as upcoming - will perform day and night, non-stop, for 100 hours!
Besides being a tribute to the legend Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, this event will serve several noble causes. It will be a prayer on behalf of all musicians for the cause of our deteriorating environment and against global warming. It will also be a prayer to avert incidents like the recent blasts in Bangalore and Ahmedabad, and for universal peace and harmony.
The entire event is open to rasikas. However, the organizers will accept donations, which will be forwarded to the descendants of the great composer Shyama Shastri - one of the Carnatic trinity - who now live in penury.
Besides the music, there will be added attractions for the audience, in the form of special prizes. Prizes will be awarded to those rasikas who are present for the maximum duration.
The program will begin at 5:30 pm on the 31st of July and conclude at about 10:00 pm on the 4th of August. It will take place at Tyagaraja Sangeetha Vidwat Samajam, Mylapore.
