Music maestro Ilaiyaraja's much-awaited album "Thiruvasagam in Symphony" was released in Chennai on June 30th, 2005. Thiruvasagam is the sacred mystic Tamil poetry by Manikkavasagar, an 8th century AD minister in the Pandyan kingdom. Drawing inspiration form G. U. Pope's translation of the masterpiece, Ilaiyaraja got a 90-piece Budapest orchestra, 60 East European adult voices with a choir of 25 children, a choir of 60 Indian voices, 40 Indian musicians, 10 voices from New York — and produced an oratorio. Academy award winning lyricist Stephen Schwartz characterized the music as "a classical crossover ... unlike anything I have ever heard before". Thirty months in the making, Thiruvasagam in Symphony is the fruit of the joint efforts of Ilayaraja, Tamil Maiyam, a non-profit organization led by the Rev. Jegath Gaspar Raj, musicians from three continents and donors from all over the world. Carnatica is happy to be associated with Tamil Maiyam in distributing copies of this masterpiece album.
