CARNATICA'S SUMMER CAMPS AT CHENNAI AND OOTY - OVERWHELMING SUCCESSES |
Carnatica
organized a very unique Summer Camp at its T.Nagar premises from May 1 to
10, 2002. This camp was aimed at giving the students an overall exposure
to voice training. The course included Yoga and Voice culture in addition
to devotional music, folk music and Japanese music. The students were also
taught some masterpieces in Carnatic music. This camp was very well
attended by students between the ages of 3 and 20. There
were also classes on Hindustani music which were handled by Smt. Saumya
Madangopal. Devotional music was taught by Smt. Seetha Narayanan while
folk music was taught by Smt. S Sowmya and Smt. Ganga Ramachandran. The
classes on voice culture and masterpieces in Carnatic music were handled
by Smt. S Sowmya, Sri. K N Shashikiran and Sri. P Ganesh. A crash course
in Japanese music was offered for the very first time in Chennai as part
of the course. Miss Mayumi Yamada from Osaka, Japan was the course
instructor. One
of the other highlight of
the camp were the guest lectures and classes by reputed musicologists and
musicians like Prof. S R Janakiraman, Sri. N Ravikiran and Sri. N Vijay
Siva. The
10-day camp concluded with a music test for all the
students, and deserving students were awarded
certificates of merit. Camp at Ooty: Carnatica
organized another summer camp at Ooty and Coimbatore for its music
students between 16th and 21st May 2002. It was again a first-of-its-kind
concept, where the students and the teachers stayed together and
‘escaped the heat to experience a musical treat'! Students
between the ages of 8 and 20
were part of this camp. There
was a lecture-concert on May 18th at the Lawrence School, Lovedale, based
on Carnatica’s Parichaya
concept, where the school students were initiated into the basic aspects
of Carnatic music. There were renditions by Carnatica’s students, both
group and individual, to substantiate the points that were made during the
lecture. At the end of the presentation was a quiz for the school
students, which evoked a lot of audience participation. The
students of Carnatica had the rare opportunity of performing in the
inaugural programme of the Ooty Flower Show on May 19th, at the end of
which they were awarded mementos by the Collector of the Nilgiris
district. The students and the staff of Carnatica also had the privilege
to perform at Sri Dayananda Saraswati’s Ashram in Coimbatore and invoke
the blessings of the great Swamiji. On
May 20th was the final programme by
Carntaica students at the Bhadrakali Amman temple. At the same venue, on
the following day, there were two concerts, one by Smt. S Sowmya and the
other by Sri. K N Shashikiran and Sri. P Ganesh. Accompaniment for both
concerts were provided by Sri. Kovai Balu (violin) and Poongulam Sri.
Subramanian (mridangam). Needless
to say, the
response to the camp was overwhelming with the participants thoroughly
enjoying the experience of staying with their teachers and peers, and also
involving themselves in a variety of musical discussions, games and
concerts. Based on the excellent response to both the camps, Carnatica has decided to organize yet another summer camp at its Adyar premises between June 1st and 7th, 2002.
