Concert of B. Ranjani & B. Gayatri (Vocal), Mysore Srikanth (Violin), Mannargudi Srinivasan (Mridangam), N. Guruprasad (Ghatam) at Tyagaraja Sangeeta Vidwat Samajam, Chennai on 28th April 2004.

"When one understands that Jeevatma and Paramathma are the same, one secures all the good character needed to lead an enlightened life", says Saint Tyagrabrahmam in his famous Varali kriti "karuNa ElakanDe". Here Tyagaraja pinpoints the elements of the best character one attains in worshipping Lord Rama. This song was considered the preserve of the Maharajapuram and Semmangudi schools during yesteryears. But is welcome that today's youngsters are successfully presenting it the same way.

Ranjani & Gayatri brought to light all the bhavas and swarupams of this kriti at their concert at Sangeeta Vidwat Samajam on Wednesday, the 28th April. After a thrilling Varali raga presentation, the sisters' neraval at paramAtmuDu jIvAtmuDu was a total success. The sisters had started their concert with the varnam 'calamEla' in Darbar of Tiruvottriyur Tyagayyar, who himself was a vainika and son of Veena Kuppayyar, a direct disciple of Tyagabrahmam. The famous 'kSINamai' in Mukhari raga, another master piece of Semmangudi, was given full treatment in the slow tempo with the beautifully piled up sangatis. Gayatri's Mukhari alapana had elegant sancharas.

The main raga was Sankarabharanam. Ranjani gracefully sung the pURvAngam and Gayatri took over the elaboration, choreographing it in breathtaking fashion, drawing applause. For the kriti manasu swAdhInamE, the neraval at tanavvuthani was fine and expressive. MDR's sAgara shayana vibhO in Bhageshri was in a fast tempo contrary to its original style, but sweet all the same. The violin support of Mysore Srikanth was superb all along, especially in raga essays. The tani Avartanam by Mannargudi Srinivasan and Guruprasad was well executed. Their percussion support was good throughout. The concert was unusually well attended, quite unique at the Samajam, reflecting the sisters' talent.
