PAPANASAM SIVAN SONGS COMPETITION |

Siva Punya Gana Mani Brahmashri Papanasam Sivan's
birth anniversary is celebrated every year in September. This year we are
celebrating the 113th Birth Anniversary of Sri Sivan in a grand manner. He
has composed over 2000 songs in both carnatic music and film songs. His
compositions include varnams, kritis, operas and all types of compositions
typically rendered in a concert.
To propagate the works and compositions of Papanasam Sivan, the Papanasam Sivan Rasikar Sangam conducts music competitions annually. This year the competition will be held on Sunday, September 7th 2003. The best talented participant in the main competition will be awarded the Smt.Narayaniammal Vaidyasubramania Iyer Memorial Tambura prize instituted by her son/industrialist Shri.V.Vaidyanathan. Various prizes will also be awarded to the participants in different groups. Following are the details of competitions to be held : 1. VOCAL COMPETITION - The participants are divided into four age group - Sub junior, junior, sub senior and senior. Sub juniors are required to sing 7 songs of Sivan, while junior and subsenior groups are required to sing 10 songs of Sivan including one varnam. Senior group participants are required to sing raga alapana, neraval, swaram etc. 2. VARNAM COMPETITION - Common for all age groups. Participants should give a list of any 6 varnams (thana varnam and/or pada varnam) composed by Papanasam Sivan. 3. OPERAS COMPETITION - Papanasam Sivan has composed 2 operas viz., Sri Rama Charitha Geetham & Kaaraikkal Ammaiyar. Sri Rama Charitha Geetham is a raga-malika of 24 ragas. Participants should give a list of 10 ragas with Chittaswaram from Sri Rama Charitha Geetham. Competition will be held on Sunday September 07, 2003 at NARADA GANA SABHA, TTK ROAD, CHENNAI 600 018.
