Congregational singing at midnight, welcoming the New Year It was a musical New Year nite steeped in tradition. Over 50 leading musicians converged at Vani Mahal in the heart of the city, to participate in a night-long music festival organized by Carnatica. Starting on the dot of 10 pm with a soulful violin recital by Sangita Kalanidhi T. N. Krishnan, accompanied by his daughter Viji, the pinnacle of the festivities was on the stroke of midnight with the congregational chanting of "Om", followed by group rendition of popular and auspicious kritis such as Vatapi Ganapathim (Hamsadhwani), Kamakshi (Bhairavi swarajati), Endaro Mahanubhavulu (Shri) and Shanti Nilava Vendum. The traditional flavour extended to the snacks too! All musicians and guests partook of delicious panagam and pongal. Sangita Kalanidhi T. N. Suryaprakash, Vasundhara & Nisha Rajagopal, Lakshmi & Subhiksha Rangarajan, Dr. Sunder, Rajesh & Mohan Vaidya, Trivandrum Balaji, Master Balamuralikrishna, Sikkil Gurucharan, K. V. Gopalakrishnan and Vasumati Badrinathan in addition to Carnatica's own Sowmya & Shashikiran and members of the Carnatica Gurukulam.
