CONCERT TOURS IN FALL
2002 |
|
Music lovers in the US can look
forward to a musically fulfilling fall this year. There is going to be a
whole lot of variety and quality with several top-notch artistes touring
under several banners. |
|
Violin-Venu-Vina The group that
will first start touring is a unique Violin-Venu-Vina ensemble featuring G J
R Krishnan, K R Subramanyam and Srikanth Chari, accompanied by the versatile
percussionists
K V Prasad on Mridangam and Palghat Suresh on Ghatam. G J R Krishnan, the
son and disciple of violin legend Lalgudi Jayaraman, has earned the
reputation of being a fine violinist and a true representative of the
Lalgudi bani. K R Subramanyam is a disciple of another legend, flautist Dr.
N Ramani, while Srikanth Chari is yet again a disciple of Lalgudi Jayaraman.
Rasikas may remember that Lalgudi Jayaraman and Dr. N Ramani, along with
Vainika R Venkataraman, had themselves formed a Violin-Venu-Vina combination
a few years ago. So it may be all the more interesting to see their
disciples getting together on stage! G J R Krishnan will also be giving a

Ravikiran - Vishwa Mohan
Bhatt: Jugalbandi
The other tour will feature India’s leading “slide vina”
maestros, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and Chitravina N Ravikiran. Millennium-award
winner Ravikiran will be playing his new and exquisite 21-stringed Nava-Chitravina.
He is acknowledged as one of the few real geniuses and is one of the most successful
Carnatic musicians today. He will be joined in the jugalbandi-s by
Grammy winner Bhatt, who has successfully Indianized the Hawaiian
guitar. Having renamed it the Mohan Vina, Bhatt has firmly established this
instrument on the Hindustani stage today. Both artistes are well known
not only in their respective pure-classical genres, but also on the
world music circuit.
Percussion support in
the series will be provided by senior Ghatam and Konnakkol (vocal
percussion) exponent T H Subhash Chandran and the Tabla star Subrata
Bhattacharya. |
