All India Radio will be honouring several senior musicians and performers from all over India with a new artiste grade called "National Artiste". This category is higher than the currently existing A and A-Top grades at AIR.

Ten South Indian musical personalities are included in this list of conferees. They are:

  • T. Muktha, M. S. Subbulakshmi, D. K. Pattammal, Balamuralikrishna  (all vocalists)

  • T. N. Krishnan & M. S. Gopalakrishnan (Violin)

  • T. K. Murthy & Palakkad Raghu (Mridangam)

  • N. Ramani (Flute)

  • M. S. Viswanathan (Composer)

The formal function honouring these artistes will be held in March at New Delhi.
