A GNB REPLICA - TRICHUR RAMACHANDRAN AT MUSIC ACADEMY |
Trichur
Ramachandran presents a true replica of his master, the late G N
Balasubramaniam's style. By the time he completed Syama Sastri's
masterpiece 'Kamakshi' (Bhairavi) and 'Samana rahite'
(Sarangatarangini*), which he announced as his guru's composition, the
musical atmosphere at the Music Academy on the evening of 22nd December
2000 was well settled. The artiste was in perfect communion with the
audience. Those who have heard GNB in person would, no doubt, have
cherished the same impression while listening to the Todi of Trichur
Ramachandran. The Tyagaraja masterpiece 'Kaddanuvariki' could
have been a little slower so as to do full justice to the bhava of the
kriti. The neraval and kalpanaswaras kept up the chosen tempo.
It is rather disappointing to hear a Ragam Tanam Pallavi for such a short duration and that too, in Hindustani Kapi from such a senior vidwan. Sriram Parasuram, the violinist, maintained equal pace with the vocalist. His raga essays were blemishless. In Hindustani Kapi, he overstepped the bounds much to the relish of the audience. The wizard mridangist Umayalpuram Sivaraman is a master of very high calibre who is also versatile in stage tactics. It would be superfluous to give any word of extravagant praise for Harishankar. The Khanjira speaks and sings in his hands and he was just the right man to keep pace with Sivaraman's brilliant fireworks. |
* Sarangatarangini - A janya of Dharmavati, the 59th mela, it has a scale of S R2 M2 P D2 N3 S - S N3 D2 P M2 R2 S |
