S
P Ramh, a disciple of violin legend Lalgudi Jayaraman, performed at
Narada Gana Sabha on the 26th
of December. The accompaniments were Pakala Ramadas on the violin, B
Ganapathiraman on the mridangam and G Ravichandran on the ghatam. The concert started
with 'Devi neeye', a varnam in raga Devagandhari composed by his Lalgudi Jayaraman. The
raga Nata which is eminently suitable in the initial stages of a concert was
taken up and Ramh sang Dikshitar's popular kriti, 'Swaminatha
paripalayasumam'.
He then gave a brief alapana of the raga Hindolam and
rendered the kriti, 'Samaganalolane' of Papanasam Sivan. The next
one, an alapana of Sahana both by
the vocalist and the violinist was superb. 'Rama ikanannu' a kriti of
Patnam Subramanya Iyer, set to
Roopaka tala was sung. Neraval and kalpanaswaras was rendered for the Pallavi.
A Prati madhyama raga between two Suddha madhyama ragas not only reflects
proper planning but also adds charm to the concert. Ramh's selection was
Papanasam Sivan's popular hit in the raga Shanmukhapriya, 'Saravanabhava
ennum'. Like his guru did the previous day, Ramh also chose 'Kaligiyunde
gada' in Keeravani for his main item. The neraval and kalpanaswaras
were for the line 'Baguga sriraghuramuni'. The Tani avartanam was gentle and good.
The concert concluded with a couple of Lalgudi Jayaraman's compositions, 'Sri
Jagadeeswari' in Ahirbhairavi and a Tillana in Bhimplas.
"
He has got a wonderful voice, a mixture of Balamuralikrishna's and Maharajapuram
Santanam", said a lady who was sitting next to me. I was amazed at hearing to such a wonderful
voice too.
One Mr. Mohan said that the concert was very impressive and that Ramh possess a
lot of talent. Mr. Balasubramanian said that the Keeravani he sang was excellent and on the whole, the presentation was
good.
Mr. G. Krishnamurthi said that he was highly satisfied with the performance of the well- trained musician.
Mrs. Nandini Ramanathan however said that she has listened to many concerts of Ramh but
that this concert was not
up to her satisfaction.
