"THE CHARM OF LISTENING TO LIVE CONCERTS IS IRREPLACEABLE" |
The
grand inauguration of the 74th annual conference of the Music Academy was
celebrated on the 15th Dec 2000. Mrs.
Ranjana Kumar, Chairman & Managing Director, Indian Bank, inaugurated
the Conference. Smt. R Vedavalli was elected as the president of this
year's annual conference. Musicians Sri T K Govinda Rao and Sri M S
Gopalakrishnan a were the Chief Guests.
Mr. T T Vasu, the President of Music Academy, welcomed one and all for the conference and expressed his happiness in electing Smt. R Vedavalli as the president for this year's conference. He said that Smt. Vedavalli has been associated with the Academy as a student, teacher, performer, musicologist and in various other capacities. The Academy has chosen vidwan S Ramachandran and vidushi Ranganayaki Rajagopalan for the title of 'Sangita Kala Acharya'. The TTK awards would be given to tavil vidwan Haridwaramangalam A K Palanivel and Khanjira artiste V Nagarajan during the Sadas on 1st January 2001. Mrs. Ranjana Kumar in her
speech said that the music season in Chennai is much awaited by millions
of people from all over the world and that many upcoming artistes are also
encouraged to perform at this time. "Music
is divine, whether it is Western or Classical and listening to music gives
tremendous of tranquility and peace to mind", she said. She quoted
Rajaji's words, "Music is an essential element and part of
life". She
appreciated the developments that have taken place in the world of music
in IT industry. "But the charm
of listening to live music concerts cannot be replaced by listening to a
CD", she said. She felt that
the happiness and encouragement derived by a musician is more, when
recognised by a live audience. She extended her heartiest congratulations to Smt. Vedavalli for
having been selected for the title of Sangeeta Kalanidhi. She also praised
Vedavalli for depositing her first
scholarship amount with Indian Bank! Smt. R Vedavalli
remembered and thanked all her
music teachers and organisations with gratitude and said that
it is important for a musician to possess knowledge in musicology too. She requested the AIR to reconsider
giving more opportunities to vidwans. Mrs. Nandini Ramani, the
Secretary of Music Academy proposed the vote of thanks. The inauguration
