CARNATICA WINS THE BRITANNICA INTERNET GUIDE AWARD

Dated: 24th June, 2001

Hello all,

It gives me great pleasure to inform you that Carnatica has won the prestigious Britannica Internet Guide Award for Excellence on the Web! It is a proud moment for the Carnatica team, as this award has come to us within 9 months of our launch. We take this opportunity to thank each one of you for having stood by us and given us your valuable support and encouragement.

Now that Carnatica has settled into a smooth flow, with improvements in all the features, and with daily updates, we would like to really build on our existing database. One of the important things in this direction is the Composition Bank. We plan to build into this various sub-sections like the Ragamalika Bank, the Padam Bank, the Javali Bank and so on. The idea is to update this section too on an everyday basis so that we will have a sizeable database over a period of time. With the active participation of Dr. P P Narayanaswami, a Mathematics Professor from Canada, we propose to start a new project called 'a-song-a-day', whereby, we shall give the lyrics of at least one song a day in text and pdf formats. This will of course be apart from our regular updates in the other sections.

We are also happy to see the Rasika Forum picking up day by day, with a number of useful and interesting discussions. We hope that Carnatica will come to be recognised as the place for exchange and dissemination of valuable information.

Carnatica has now spread its wings to Australia. In her recent tour, S Sowmya, one of the founder-promoters of Carnatica, conducted several workshops on Carnatic music as part of the activities of the Carnatica Archival Centre.

Carnatica also celebrated World Music Day in association with HMV's Saregama on 21st June 2001, at Narada Gana Sabha, Chennai. The function was a runaway success, with the blessings of His Holiness Sri Vijayendra Saraswati, of the Kanchi Kamakoti Math and the active participation of all the top-notch professionals in the Carnatic firmament today. The highlights of the function were the formal inauguration of our Cyber Vidyalaya and Raga Samskriti. As part of the latter, a music competition was held for school children all over Chennai and attracted wide participation.

Several other projects and activities are in the pipeline and we shall keep you informed about them. Do feel free to post the details of any music or dance events in your area in the Calendar of Events for the benefit of other interested music/dance lovers. Suggestions for improvements in our online and offline activities are always welcome.
