Galaxy of Composers

Home > Music Handbook > Galaxy of Composers
Compositions are given the pride of place in Carnatic music. Here are some profiles and contributions of the great composers of Carnatic music. It is by no means an exhaustive list, but as Tyagaraja put it beautifully, Endaro mahanubhavulu, andariki vandanamu…

The composers here have been divided into four categories as given below. The Trinity of Carnatic music, namely, Tyagaraja, Muttuswamy Dikshitar and Shyama Shastri have been taken as the reference point for our listing since Carnatic music saw some remarkable changes during their lifetimes itself or subsequently. Be it the number of compositions, the scope and emergence of new ragas or the changes in the concert pattern, their contribution has been immense. Their period is in fact termed as the Golden Age of Carnatic music.
