About

Bharat Sangeet Utsav is Carnatica ‘s pioneering attempt at presenting the best Indian classical music and dance forms under the same roof. The format was envisaged with the aim of rekindling public interest in our art forms and emphasizing the central role of music and dance in Indian culture and history. The first Bharat Sangeet Utsav was held in November 2005 in Chennai as a ten-day extravaganza heralding the annual music season that stretches from November to February. The event met with overwhelming public response and received critical acclaim. After conducting the festival in Chennai again in 2006 & 2007, we were encouraged to try out the concept in other cities as well. The first such venture outside Chennai was held in February 2008 in Bangalore. The four-day event in Bangalore was followed by one in New Delhi, again in February 2008.

We have been lucky in getting almost all the leading South Indian artistes and several prominent North Indian musicians to perform at Bharat Sangeet Utsav. The list reads like a who’s who of the current Indian classical pantheon. The concept of Bharat Sangeet Utsav has been sustained with the help of corporate sponsorships since inception. We have tried our best to keep the events free of cost to the general public and have offered free seats at almost all performances. The concept of Donor Passes which entitle the holder to a confirmed seat has been established as a means of supplementing sponsorships to sustain the festival. Select recordings from past festivals have been released in the public domain under the Carnatica label, with the kind consent of the concerned artistes.

  1. I write to inform you about my deep disappointment in the way you have been treating your Donors – I have been a donor contributing Rs 5000 some years back to encourage your initiatives in the realm of carnatic music. At the time of donation, I was promised that I would be entitled to two passes of Rs 500 each every year for your programmes. During the past few years, I did get the two passes for such programmes – say Bharat Sangeet Utsav. However, I am informed that for Bharat Sangeet Utsav 2010, it has been decided by your management that there would not by any free tickets but would only be given a 50% discount for Life time Donors. While as management it is your prerogative to decide about charging for tickets sales, it is indeed breach of trust to change the commitment given to your supporters based on which you have collected moneys. While the money per se is not substantial, I however do not agree with your changing the basis of accepting donations – that too long after receipt of money. In this context, I would like to inform you that if this is the way you manage the affairs, I would not like to be associated with your organisation and would like to request you to return my Donation of Rs 5000.00 given to you.

    SIncerely
