Umayalpuram Swaminatha Iyer
Umayalpuram has been one of the most fertile nurseries of classical music. Swaminatha Iyer was a stalwart among them. Pupil of the famous Umayalpuram Krishna Bhagavatar and Sundara Bhagavatar, direct disciples of Tyagaraja, Swaminatha Iyer had learnt music earlier by closely watching his elder brother sing. He later learnt under Tiruvalangadu Tyagaraja Dikshitar and Kekkarai Muthu Iyer. To crown it all, he underwent a four-year gurukulavasa under Maha Vaidyanatha Iyer. He was a repository of Tyagaraja kritis and established his own style.
