DEVAKOTTAI NARAYANA IYENGAR

   
Narayana Iyengar, the son of Azhagarswami Iyengar and Soundaravalli Ammal was born in Devakottai. He had his initial training in music under Dasamangalam Venkatarama Iyer. For advanced training, he went to Tiruvidaimarudur Sakharama Rao who was also the guru of Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, Karaikkudi Sambasiva Iyer and 'Gotuvadyam' Narayana Iyengar.

He made his debut at Koliur at the age of 30, when he accompanied Karaikkudi Sambasiva Iyer whose Vina technique he followed. He was known for his sweet renditions and mastery over the instrument. He also gave duets with the great vainika M A Kalyanakrishna Bhagavatar for quite a few years and even accompanied Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar in one of his concerts in lieu of the violin.

Narayana Iyengar was also a teacher of repute and served in several institutions like the Central College of Carnatic music, Teacher's College of Music, Music Academy (both Madras) and the Bharatiya Music Arts Society in Bombay.
